Application modernization is the refactoring, re-purposing or consolidation of legacy software to align it more closely with current business needs. It addresses the migration of legacy to new applications or platforms, including the integration of new functionality to provide the latest functions to the business. Companies that rely on mainframe and midrange applications are searching for ways to use their applications with web, mobile, and cloud technologies.

In today’s competitive world, enterprises are under tremendous pressure to increase agility, flexibility, productivity, and reduce costs, and look for innovative ways to optimize their IT environment to achieve these objectives. Using legacy applications and outdated infrastructure is a time consuming, costly, resource intensive process, and is difficult to integrate with newer systems. In order to help businesses meet today’s requirements, Prakat, through its Application Modernization offering, helps customers provide rich mobile and web-front experiences to their users anywhere, anytime, while retaining their business logic on the legacy systems. Prakat also helps customers capitalize on new IT paradigms such as the Cloud, social media, mobility and big data to provide improved customer experiences across the devices (PCs, Laptops, smart phones, tablets etc.).

  • Migration to the Cloud

  • Mobile Extensions

Several enterprises are finding it difficult to continue to support the applications running on Mainframe and Midrange systems. This is mainly due to the lack of skilled manpower available to support these platforms. The way forward for several of these applications is to migrate them on to standard off-the- shelf servers running Linux or Windows. This is obviously a huge exercise considering that most enterprises would have multiples of millions of lines of code, which need to go through this transition.

Enterprises used dedicated servers in their private data centers to host several internal applications. Today the economics is pushing them to consider either private or public clouds as alternatives to the dedicated hardware. There are several factors which need to be considered when we do such a shift. We also need to consider ways to leverage more of the unique values of the cloud while we migrate the applications.

Though we continue to run our mainframe and midrange systems, many of the younger employees in enterprises are eager to use slick UI’s and not the old character based “green screens”. Many enterprises are choosing to migrate the front end applications to .net or web based platforms while the back end remains untouched.

The efficiency of several applications can be enhanced by creating mobile extensions. These provide new functionality and newer ways of working for many of the enterprises. Prakat can help you in identifying, designing and developing these applications.
